I recently attended the Niagara Divers Association Annual Shipwrecks Symposium on my birthday and had an amazing time! As an avid scuba diver and lover of all things underwater, I was thrilled to attend this event with other staff from Dan's Dive Shop. The presentations were fantastic, covering topics from the wrecks of the Great Lakes to recent discoveries and expeditions.
For y-e-a-r-s now I've been dreaming of applying to an artist residency abroad and making art in a completely different country. So I applied - and my proposal to explore, then paint the caves of the Lot region, as my subject matter was accepted!
Experiencing the Sea of Cortez above and below the waterline has brought the fire back to my painting practice. Waking up every day and bathing in the beauty of each pink and coral coloured sunrise while staring at the incredible geology of the rugged coast of the Baja peninsula glowing in the growing light was a blessing and it spurred the creation of so many new paintings!
Sharing a bit of my process in making my diving experiences more tangible. I've taken much inspiration from almost all my dives and if I don't have a photo or video from the dive, my memories and impressions from those dives are also part of my process in making art.
