It may not have a backbone - literally - but the sea sponge sure packs a punch in its role in the ocean. The humble but stunning sea sponge is one of my reef favourites to see while diving, not just because of their incredible vivid colour - but because it is one example of the many ways in which the ocean provides for us. A sea sponge can filter roughly 20,000 times their own volume of water every day and in doing so filters the water, collects bacteria and processes carbon to create nutrient rich reefs. Since the middle ages, sponges have been used for a variety of medicinal purposes and today their compounds are used in medicines to treat viral infections, infectious diseases and certain cancer treatments. Coming in a variety of shapes, colours and sizes sponges are the oldest living organism in the ocean having been around for about 500 million years. Talk about survivors!
