Immerse yourself in the dramatic history of World War 2 as you gaze upon this breathtaking painting of the S.S. Saganaga, one of the Bell Island Newfoundland wrecks. On September 5, 1942, WW2 came to Canada’s shores. The German sub U-513 launched a fierce attack on the anchored ship, firing two torpedoes that failed to arm. But the U-boat was not done yet. They unleashed two more torpedoes, hitting the ship in the bow and stern. The Saganaga succumbed to the attack and sank in a mere three minutes, heavily loaded with iron ore.

I painted this to capture the eerie beauty of seeing the bow of the S.S. Saganaga as she came to rest on the seabed of Conception Bay Newfoundland. The upper two-thirds of the painting showcase the bow with its railing and bow chains, covered in vibrant orange, cream, and pink plumose anemone. The colours fade into deep emerald green and dark navy blue at the bottom of the painting. Two divers can be seen approaching the bow, their beams of light illuminating their way as they explore the wreck.

This large acrylic on canvas painting is a perfect conversation starter for any living room, large hallway, staircase, office, or even as a focal point while dining. It's a must-have for any history buff, shipwreck enthusiast, and scuba diver. Experience the thrill of exploration and the wonder of the deep sea as you contemplate this original piece of art.

  • Acrylic painting on stretched gallery wrapped heavy duty canvas
  • 24" wide x 48" high x 1.5" depth
  • The scene comes unframed but is painted to the edges and around the sides so that it can be displayed without the need for framing
  • If you do want to personalize the display of this painting with a frame, a floating frame treatment would work well in a neutral colour
